What is Upper and Lower Back Pain?
Upper and lower back pain is common among patients of all ages. The symptoms may be caused by a sports injury, auto accident, poor ergonomics, work environment and much more. Surgery is often recommended for chronic upper and lower back pain, but this approach may cause more problems than it remedies. Any type of surgery places you at risk for developing scar tissue and can cause adverse effects on surrounding tissues. Our conservative, non-surgical approaches to upper and lower back pain have helped men, women, teenagers, and even children overcome their conditions.

Lower Back Pain Treatment
The lower back consists of muscles, nerves, vertebrae, and other structures that are placed under pressure with almost any movement that you make. You may not realize how much you depend on your lower back until it is injured. Lower back treatment aims to identify the root cause of your pain, and in some cases, the problem is actually in the neck or upper back region.
Upper Back Pain Treatment
Upper back pain is defined as discomfort that occurs from the base of the neck to the area just above your shoulder blades. It may also involve your lower neck region.
Middle Back Pain Treatment
The middle back is the area that begins between your shoulder blades and extends downward to just above your hips. The pain in this area typically is not persistent, but occurs with certain movements.
Neck Pain Treatment
Neck pain may develop just below the base of your skull or on the sides of your neck. You may notice radiating pain that extends into your shoulders or jaw. The pain may also be localized.
Degenerative Disc Disease Treatment
The discs of your spine are filled with fluid that provide cushion between your vertebrae. Degenerative disc disease is a condition in which these discs are damaged or deteriorating for some reason.
Extruded/Herniated/Bulging Discs Treatment
A herniated disc, also known as a bulging disc or extruding disc, is one that is pushed out from its normal position between the vertebrae. When the disc is out of place, it puts pressure on the nerves and causes pain. You may experience a sharp sudden pain with movement or have a persistent aching.
Post Laminectomy Syndrome Treatment
Also known as “failed back syndrome,” post laminectomy syndrome is a condition that develops after a person has back surgery. The most common symptom is chronic back pain that develops after the procedure, but patients may also experience a dull aching in the legs and back. Post laminectomy syndrome typically develops when surgery is performed unnecessarily or when the surgery caused detrimental changes to the spine, discs and nerves. This is one of many reasons why we recommend conservative, non-surgical options to our patients.
Prolapsed Disc Treatment
Also known as a “slipped disc,” a prolapsed disc occurs when the fluid-filled sac between the vertebrae bulges or moves out of place. Although a prolapse disc is caused by many circumstances, poor body mechanics (such as using your back to lift heavy objects) is the most common cause of the condition.
Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain Treatment
The sacroiliac joint is located between the hip bones and triangular bone that is connected to the lumbar spine (lower back) and tailbone. Pain in the joint may develop as having difficulty sitting or lying on the affected side, pain in the buttock, and discomfort during routine tasks.
Sciatica Pain Treatment
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, and it runs through an opening in the hip bone and down the leg. When pressure is placed on the nerve, the pain can be debilitating and last for several weeks or longer. Sciatica pain typically starts in the buttock of the affected side and runs down the length of the leg. Some people also have foot pain.
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that causes problems with posture, uneven shoulder blades, and hip problems. Without treatment, the spine may twist and rotate, which results in additional curvature.
Spinal stenosis describes a condition in which the spine narrows, causing pressure on the nerves. It may indicate osteoarthritis or other medical conditions.
Spondylolisthesis and spondylosis are two conditions that develop in the lower back and are most often diagnosed in young children and adolescence who are involved in sports. Spondylosis is a fracture of the vertebrae that is caused by stress.
When the stress fracture of spondylosis is not treated or when treatment fails, the patient may develop spondylolisthesis. The affected vertebrae degenerates, allowing the disc to slip out of place.
